Helping Education Move Beyond "Detection"

Free AI Detection and Research Tool

AI detection is becoming an increasingly difficult and stressful job for teachers in the UK. When faced with AI-generated content, you have the challenge of proving it in order to protect the integrity of the assessment.

We're caught in a strange moment in educational history where on one hand it's important that learners create their own work in most formal assessment scenarios, but on the other hand, we're trying to prepare them for a future where AI will be at the heart of everything we do.

The challenge is that staff are now in a position where many of the assessments and assignments have not been updated, and therefore we're all having to turn into AI 'police' on occasion.

Another significant issue is that as the regulators become increasingly concerned about the issue, they will place more pressure on the Awarding Organisations to be checking all work submitted. The worry is that someone has to detect it, and if it's not done at the source, then pressure will come from all directions.

Whilst we figure out a plan moving forward, there appears to be a need for detection tools, and the fact that the AI problem is only going to get worse, I thought I would try and take a unique approach to gathering information and oddly using an AI detection tool as a route to reducing the need for them in the process.

As part of this research, with a view to launching a research sprint on the topic later this year, I've created this simple checking app which lets you earn credit for checks, by answering a short question about detection and the challenges of AI.

You can try it here: https://detect.testcommunity.network/

How it works and what I ask of the users

As is 100% clear in the app, AI detection is not a foolproof method of detection. You will know your learners and you will have a strong indication as to whether the work you are looking at is genuine. A tool like this should only be one step in your process of checking integrity. When experimenting with the tool, there were occasions when I shared part human, part AI content and it came back with a 100% AI detection score. So, this solution isn't perfect, but it is one of the better ones on the market.

If you want to learn more about Pangram, then watch this interview I did with Brad in 2025: https://www.youtube.com/live/tKzKjCWAoXU

Each user gets one free daily check. After that, to unlock 10 credits all I ask is they complete one question from a stack of 20. Your responses will be checked by AI, to make sure they are reasonable and not gibberish. They won't be checked to see if you use AI to answer the question!

The more genuine and constructive your responses to the questions, the more helpful it will be to the industry and my research.

All responses will be treated with anonymity and will not be connected with the work checked. No connections will be drawn. I'm just interested in your ideas and worries about the challenge of using AI in education and assessment.

The end game

Once I have gathered some insights, my plan is to launch a research sprint later in the year. You can see the active research sprints here: https://research.testcommunity.network/

These insights and ideas will then be shared with the testing community for the better good of assessment integrity and the evolution of assessment and learner experience.

Ultimately, I, like many, want to be able to encourage the use of AI, without impacting the integrity, value and fairness of assessment.

Please share this tool with colleagues across the UK so that we can build a better picture on how we can ultimately reduce the need for AI detection and stressful conversations with learners.
